Legal Aid Society
Every day, more than 840 Legal Aid attorneys and 600 support staff members help thousands of indigent New Yorkers deal with serious legal crises at no cost. The Legal Aid Society handles more than 30,000 civil cases each year through court-based and neighborhood offices in all five boroughs. Unlike its juvenile and criminal practices which are financed by government, its civil practice relies on private contributions. Founded in 1876, the society provides legal services through a network of borough, neighborhood and courthouse offices in over 25 locations in New York. It specializes in handling matters associated with civil, criminal and juvenile rights. The Legal Aid Society offers construction, securities, tort, environmental, and labor and employment litigation support services. It also provides assistance for employment discrimination, domestic violence, prisoners' rights, medical negligence, police misconduct and family issues. The Legal Aid Society has branch locations in various cities, including New York City, Bronx, Staten Island and Brooklyn, N.Y.
