During that time he participated in research to advance the understanding of second messenger systems, including those involved with diseases such as diabetes. After obtaining his B.S., he attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, where he also participated in research with Janet Serle, MD and developed computer programs that aided in the study of earlier detection of glaucoma using newly advanced technologies. Dr. Sleem completed his residency in Albany Medical Center where he was distinguished as the Chief Resident for his graduating year. During that time Dr. Sleem participated in research with Michael Belin, MD concerning earlier detection of Keratoconus and patients at risk for post-LASIK ectasia, a dreaded complication of LASIK surgery. He developed a further interest in corneal disease and transplant surgery and stayed in Albany for an additional year of Fellowship with Robert Schultze, MD and Robert Eden, MD where he trained in advanced anterior segment surgery including full and partial thickness corneal transplants, advanced and complicated cataract surgery and ocular anterior segment tumors. Today Dr. Abraham Sleem is an attending with the NYU family of hospitals where he is a clinical instructor and the Chief of Woodhull Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic where he is responsible for supervising the NYU Ophthalmology residents and teaching cataract surgery. In addition to his hospital duties, Dr. Sleem also recently started a private practice in his hometown neighborhood of Bay Ridge Brooklyn.
