Gertie
With cheerful murals that beg to be photographed, vinyls providing the soundtrack, and pieces for sale by Brooklyn-based artist Andrea Smith, the creative quotient is high at this casual spot by Nate Adler. But thankfully, there’s plenty of substance to back the good looks. Inspired by Adler’s grandmother (hence the name) and growing up in New York, Gertie’s menu skews heavy on comfort and nostalgia. Come morning, the best bites include anything baked (including the bialys and sourdough bread) by Savannah Turley. Lunch continues to build upon Turley’s talent with inventive sandwiches like the Cauliflower Melt, while the rotisserie take center stage at night with suppers of trout, chicken, and the house “Poppy's Duck.” The family-style feast, available only by request, includes scallion pancakes, fried rice, lettuce cups, and sweet-and-sour sauce.
